Residential, commercial and industrial buildings all have drainage and sewer systems where potential issues and problems can occasionally occur. Often it is difficult to locate where and to what degree damage has been caused by a fault or blockage in underground drain or sewer systems, stormwater networks, pipelines, drains and ducts.
This is where CCTV pipe inspection cameras are a valuable tool to accurately detect issues to minimise downtime, save time & money and prevent unnecessary works being carried out.
In this article we highlight features to keep in mind when purchasing drain and sewer camera inspection systems.
- Illumination: Sewer cameras are used to inspect areas that are dark making it difficult to see. Capturing a quality images and videos requires a bright light source. This is why you should look for inspection cameras equipped with bright LED lights that are adjustable.
- Type of head: Don’t be fooled by cheap cameras equipped with standard heads. Instead opt for cameras with features such as pan/tilt and self-levelling which will allow you to go around corners and see behind the walls or the sides of a pipeline.
- Durability: Your sewer camera should be waterproof. Cameras that have stainless steel housing are highly recommended.
- Flexibility: 1 Camera – 2 Displays. Does the inspection system offer an app which allows you to use your smartphone or tablet as a second screen? This allows another viewer to follow the inspection from another location.
- Always make sure that your cable (or “pushrod”), is long enough to reach from one manhole from another. In general, the length of available pushrods varies between 20 and 120 meters. If you need to extend it further, a reel with a stand can be used.
- For most applications, PVC covered pushrods offer the required sturdiness. However, they can get damaged and worn out because of heavy duty inspections – an authorised repair centre can usually repair kinked or broken pushrods.
- You can enhance the longevity of your device by using pushrods that are water and chemicals proof, and capable of withstanding 1-6 bar pressure.
- The screen should be able to provide a clear picture of the inspected area. A wider screen with high resolution is always better for this purpose.
- Today’s advanced sewer inspection cameras are capable of capturing a wide range of file types with different resolutions. The footage from these cameras can be saved as a video in AVI or MPEG format, or simply as a JPEG file.
- Radio transmitters located in the tip of the probe can be an excellent addition. This tool helps users locate their cameras easily.
- Can it record and store photos and videos for documentation and archiving purposes?
- Easy-clean options are also something to consider when looking at pipe inspection cameras.
